A Better Way of Cutting Coupons

Saving money is something that never goes out of style, but the methods of cashing in on discounts have changed. In fact, coupon-cutting has, more or less, become a thing of the past.

Today’s savvy seniors are downloading money-saving apps directly to their smartphones.

Money-saving apps on smartphone

With smartphone apps, you can search for discounts in your area and even compare sale prices from multiple grocery stores, without leaving your home.

We’ve rounded up five seniors’ coupon apps that are easy to use, and offer a variety of deals, from prescriptions to electronics:

Good Rx

GoodRx, (iOS, Android cost: free)

Search the name of popular medications like Lipitor or Prilosec. GoodRx will find the best prices at pharmacies in your area, and provide a cost comparison. The app also lets you know if there’s a coupon available; just show the pharmacist the coupon on your phone once you’ve entered your information. You can use this app for other family members, and it even works for prescriptions for pets.

Senior Discounts

Senior Discounts, (iOS, cost: $1.99)

This app is helpful for finding a variety of senior discounts across North America, including restaurants, automotive, grocery and travel. (Who knew Banana Republic had a 10% discount for those of us over 55?)

It also breaks down discounts by age range (55+, 60+, 62+ and 65+), with the best deals for people over 65 (proof that getting older has multiple benefits).

Also, if you find a discount that’s not listed, you can add it to help others find the same deal.

Grocery Pal

Grocery Pal, (iOS, cost: free)

This is an excellent seniors’ grocery coupon app. You can see, at a glance, when stores are offering senior discounts. Plus you can skip multiple trips to the grocery store by checking and comparing sale prices of the grocery stores in your area ahead of time. For maximum savings, use Grocery Pal to strategically plan your shopping trips.

AARP Member Advantages

Keep up on the latest news, download a digital version of your AARP card, map out directions for travel, and locate the discounts and deals closest to you with AARP Membership Advantages.

Oh, and don’t forget another tried-and-true method that often gets results when it comes to saving money: ask for a discount in person.
